Week 1 gave fans everything they could ask for, from statement wins, shocking results, offensive explosions and enough questions to carry into September. Now the games get heavier.

Week 2 marks the beginning of region play for much of the state, and with the Alabama Sports Writers Association releasing its second poll of the 2026 season, the stakes are already rising. Thompson remains No. 1 in Class 6A, Saraland sits atop 5A, Williamson leads 4A, Plainview owns the No. 1 spot in 3A, Fyffe is No. 1 in 2A and Maplesville leads 1A.

Here are the 25 games we're watching most closely in Week 2:

1. No. 1 Thompson vs. No. 2 Vestavia Hills

Class 6A | Friday

This is the game Alabama has been waiting for since the schedule was released. Thompson enters 2-0 after overwhelming Clay-Chalkville 37-13, while Vestavia Hills improved to 2-0 with a 23-7 victory over Benjamin Russell. The Warriors are No. 1 in the ASWA poll, while Vestavia sits No. 2, making this a legitimate clash of the state's two best-ranked teams. Thompson's explosive offense against Vestavia's physical defense could determine who owns the early 6A championship conversation.

2. No. 4 Hoover at No. 9 Hewitt-Trussville

Class 6A | Friday

Hoover arrives unbeaten and looking every bit like a championship contender after opening the season with wins over Opelika and another quality opponent. Hewitt-Trussville is 1-1 after opening with a 56-42 shootout win over Auburn before falling 42-20 to Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa. The Huskies have proven they can score, but Hoover will present a completely different defensive challenge. With both teams ranked in the latest ASWA poll, this one could have major implications down the road.

3. No. 10 Enterprise at No. 8 Opelika

Class 6A | Friday

Enterprise comes into Bulldog Stadium unbeaten after a wild 40-38 victory over Pike Road. Opelika, meanwhile, is looking for its first win after dropping a 21-7 showdown to Hoover. The Bulldogs now face an Enterprise offense that has already demonstrated its ability to score quickly and often. For Opelika, this is an early opportunity to turn around a season that began with a difficult test.

4. No. 6 Auburn at Carver-Montgomery

Class 6A | Friday

Auburn bounced back from its opening loss to Hewitt-Trussville by defeating Choctawhatchee 31-21. Carver-Montgomery enters 1-1 after opening the season with a victory before falling to Daphne. Auburn's offense has shown flashes of being dangerous, but consistency will be critical against a Carver team capable of creating problems defensively. With Auburn ranked No. 6, the Tigers cannot afford another stumble if they want to remain among 6A's elite.

5. No. 7 Spain Park vs. Oak Mountain

Class 6A | Friday

Spain Park has quietly become one of the state's most intriguing teams after opening 2-0 and allowing only 13 points. Oak Mountain responded to an opening loss by dominating Buckhorn 38-14. The matchup pits Spain Park's early defensive success against an Oak Mountain offense that showed significant improvement in Week 1. This could be one of the night's most important games outside the state's headline matchups.

6. No. 1 Saraland vs. Gulf Shores

Class 5A | Friday

Saraland begins another season as the team everyone in 5A is chasing. The Spartans are ranked No. 1 after opening 1-0, while Gulf Shores has raced to a 2-0 start and is receiving votes in the ASWA poll. Gulf Shores has the confidence of an unbeaten team, but Saraland represents a dramatic jump in competition. If the Dolphins can challenge the Spartans, they immediately become one of the most interesting teams in the classification.

7. No. 2 Vigor vs. Orange Beach

Class 4A | Friday

Vigor moves all the way into the No. 7 spot on our list because this is simply too good to leave out of the top tier. The Wolves are 2-0 and ranked No. 2 in 4A, while Orange Beach is also 2-0 and receiving votes after an explosive opening to the season. Vigor has allowed only 10 points through two games, while Orange Beach has shown the ability to overwhelm opponents offensively. This is one of Alabama's best ranked-versus-unranked small-school showdowns.

8. Mountain Brook at No. 7 Homewood

Class 5A | Friday

This Birmingham-area rivalry arrives with both teams searching for momentum. Mountain Brook is 1-1 after falling to UMS-Wright, while Homewood also enters 1-1 after a narrow loss to Briarwood Christian. Both programs are ranked among the state's elite or receiving serious consideration, and both understand the importance of getting region play started correctly. Expect a physical game in which field position and turnovers could become decisive.

9. Florence at No. 6 Muscle Shoals

Class 5A | Friday

Florence is riding a 2-0 start after blasting Jasper 50-21. Muscle Shoals, ranked No. 6, enters 0-1 after a difficult opening night. That makes this game particularly fascinating: Florence has momentum, while Muscle Shoals has the ranking and home-field advantage. The winner gains an important early foothold in a loaded part of the 5A landscape.

10. No. 3 Parker at Mortimer Jordan

Class 5A | Friday

Parker made one of Week 1's biggest statements by destroying James Clemens 34-7. Mortimer Jordan enters unbeaten at 2-0 and now gets the opportunity to knock off one of the state's highest-ranked teams. Parker's defense looked dominant last week, but Mortimer Jordan will provide a different challenge. This is exactly the kind of early-season game that can tell us whether a team is a contender or simply a highly ranked name.

11. No. 4 Benjamin Russell at Park Crossing

Class 5A | Thursday

Benjamin Russell has no time to dwell on its opening loss to Vestavia Hills. The Wildcats travel to Park Crossing, which has opened the season 2-0 and has already shown plenty of defensive toughness. Benjamin Russell remains No. 4 in the ASWA poll despite its 0-1 record, making this a major opportunity to justify that ranking. Park Crossing, meanwhile, can turn an unbeaten start into statewide credibility with a victory.

12. No. 8 Russell County at Stanhope Elmore

Class 5A | Friday

Russell County has been one of the state's hottest teams, opening 2-0 and dominating opponents on both sides of the football. Stanhope Elmore, meanwhile, suffered a 68-14 loss to Prattville in Week 1. The Warriors now face a Russell County team that has already demonstrated an ability to score in bunches. Stanhope Elmore needs a dramatic response to prevent the season from slipping away early.

13. No. 9 Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa at Hueytown

Class 5A | Friday

Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa has been downright explosive, scoring 106 points through its first two games. The Patriots followed a 64-0 opening-night victory by knocking off Hewitt-Trussville 42-20. Hueytown enters 0-2 and has surrendered 105 points, creating an enormous challenge for its defense. If Hueytown can slow Hillcrest down, this becomes one of the week's biggest surprises; if not, the Patriots could continue their early-season offensive avalanche.

14. No. 2 Clay-Chalkville at Springville

Class 5A | Friday

Clay-Chalkville drops to No. 14 on our games list only because Week 2 is loaded with elite matchups. The Cougars are 1-1 after their 37-13 loss to No. 1 Thompson, while Springville enters 0-2. Clay-Chalkville has too much talent to overlook, but another poor performance would create legitimate questions about one of 5A's traditional powers. Springville gets the opportunity to make the Cougars uncomfortable from the opening whistle.

15. No. 4 Scottsboro vs. Fairview

Class 4A | Friday

Scottsboro is 2-0 and ranked No. 4 after opening the season with a pair of impressive victories. Fairview has also started unbeaten and enters this matchup with confidence. The Wildcats' defense has been particularly impressive, including a 62-0 shutout of Crossville. Fairview will need to find a way to keep this game from becoming another runaway if it wants to leave with a statement win.

16. No. 3 Alexandria vs. Moody

Class 4A | Friday

Alexandria opened its season with a 51-7 demolition of Coosa Christian. Moody, meanwhile, enters 0-2 after losses to Briarwood and Helena. The Blue Devils have the higher ranking, the stronger start and plenty of offensive confidence. Moody's biggest challenge will be finding a way to slow Alexandria before the game gets away early.

17. No. 1 Plainview at New Hope

Plainview is the No. 1 team in Class 3A and enters Week 2 at 2-0 after defeating Good Hope 31-24 and Boaz 41-25. New Hope is also undefeated at 2-0, making this one of the most important games on the small-school schedule. The Bears are no longer simply protecting a ranking; they are defending their position as the state's top-ranked 3A program. New Hope has the chance to make a major statement against the team sitting at the top of the classification.

18. No. 2 Geraldine at No. 5 North Jackson

Class 3A | Friday

Geraldine made a statement in its opener, blasting Anniston 54-6. North Jackson enters 1-0 and also produced an impressive offensive performance in its opener. The two teams have enough firepower to make this one of the week's most entertaining games. Whichever team controls the line of scrimmage should have the inside track on a massive early-season victory.

19. No. 4 Opp at No. 8 Flomaton

Class 3A | Friday

Opp has opened 2-0 and has already scored 83 points. Flomaton enters 1-0 and is ranked No. 8 after an impressive start of its own. This matchup brings together two teams with legitimate offensive weapons and ambitions of playing deep into November. If the defenses cannot slow things down, this could become one of Friday night's most entertaining shootouts.

20. Valley vs. Charles Henderson

Class 4A | Friday

Valley enters after a dominant 42-12 victory over Lanett, while Charles Henderson opened with a 38-13 win over Hope Christian. Both teams showed plenty of offensive firepower in Week 1 and now face a much more meaningful test. Valley's ability to control the game physically will be critical against a Charles Henderson squad that has already shown it can create explosive plays. This is exactly the type of matchup that can establish a team as a legitimate 4A contender.

21. Andalusia at Straughn

Class 4A | Friday

Andalusia enters with a 1-1 record after bouncing back from a season-opening loss to Wetumpka with a 31-9 win over Robertsdale. Straughn is 0-1 after a hard-fought 14-7 loss to T.R. Miller, giving the Tigers a chance to make an immediate statement in region play. The rivalry has history, with Andalusia holding a 15-4 all-time advantage and winning the last meeting 34-7 in 2017.

22. No. 1 Fyffe at Section

Class 2A | Friday

Fyffe enters Week 2 as the No. 1 team in Class 2A and unbeaten at 2-0. Section is also off to a strong start at 1-0, setting the stage for a difficult early challenge for the top-ranked Lions. Fyffe's physical style has made it one of Alabama's most consistent small-school powers. Section will need to play mistake-free football to keep the state's top-ranked 2A program from controlling the game.

23. No. 8 Thomasville vs. W.S. Neal

Class 2A | Friday

Thomasville is 2-0 and ranked No. 8 in Class 2A after an impressive opening to the season. W.S. Neal enters after a 20-10 loss to Bullock County and will be looking for a major response against one of the state's ranked programs. The teams are familiar opponents, having met 18 times previously, with Thomasville holding a 14-4 advantage. W.S. Neal has the opportunity to flip the script, but Thomasville enters with the clear momentum advantage.

24. No. 2 Luverne at Chickasaw

Class 2A | Friday

Luverne has opened 2-0 and is ranked No. 2 after scoring 96 points through its first two games. Chickasaw enters 1-1 and now gets the difficult assignment of slowing one of the state's most explosive small-school offenses. The Tigers have been especially dangerous on the ground, putting pressure on opponents to tackle consistently for four quarters. Chickasaw cannot afford to fall behind early if it wants to make this a competitive finish.

25. No. 2 Addison at Waterloo

Class 1A | Friday

Addison has been nearly perfect to begin the season, entering 2-0 and ranked No. 2 in Class 1A. The Bulldogs have yet to allow a point, including shutouts of Winston County and Lynn. Waterloo enters after a 35-0 loss to Holy Spirit and now faces one of the state's most difficult defensive challenges. On paper the matchup looks lopsided, but regional football has a way of creating opportunities for the underdog.

TWO HONORABLE MENTIONS

Satsuma vs. LeFlore — 4A: Two teams with legitimate early-season momentum collide in a game that could become important in the regional standings.

Arab vs. Albertville — 5A: Both teams enter 2-0, giving this North Alabama matchup the feel of an early measuring stick.

Friday night will provide the first real opportunity for contenders to separate themselves from everyone else. The first Friday of September won't answer every question, but it will create plenty of new ones.
