The first Friday night of the 2026 season delivered exactly what football fans were hoping for: big plays, statement performances, surprising results and enough unanswered questions to make Week 1 even more intriguing.

Week 0 was never going to tell the entire story. But across the state, several teams gave us an early glimpse of what they could become — while others walked off the field knowing there is plenty of work left to do.

Vestavia Hills Makes Its Statement

Perhaps the most impressive opening-night performance came from Vestavia Hills, which handled Parker 32-14.

The Rebels weren't simply productive on the scoreboard. They controlled the line of scrimmage, finished with 368 total yards and converted 7-of-13 third downs. That efficiency matters.

Now comes the real test.

Vestavia Hills travels to face Benjamin Russell in one of the state's marquee Week 1 matchups. Benjamin Russell did not play in Week 0 after its scheduled game against Mae Jemison was canceled because of a power outage.

That creates an unusual dynamic: Vestavia has already experienced Friday-night game speed, while Benjamin Russell enters its season opener without a current-game sample.

The numbers from Week 0 are useful. But Friday night will provide the first real comparison.

Luverne, Brantley Bring the Offense

If Week 0 proved anything, it's that there will be no shortage of points when Luverne and Brantley take the field.

Luverne exploded for 52 points in a 52-14 victory over Pike County. Brantley wasn't far behind, scoring 48 in a 48-27 win over Pike Liberal Arts.

On the surface, the offensive numbers are the headline.

Look closer, however, and the defensive numbers make this matchup even more interesting.

Luverne finished with a +38 scoring margin. Brantley's was +21.

Now those two teams meet in Week 1.

The question isn't simply which offense can score.

It's which defense can force the other offense to operate outside of its comfort zone.

Auburn's 42 Points Come With a Warning

Auburn High's Week 0 matchup against Hewitt-Trussville turned into an offensive track meet.

Hewitt-Trussville ultimately prevailed 56-42, but Auburn's ability to score 42 points shouldn't be overlooked.

At the same time, giving up 56 points creates an obvious question heading into Week 1.

Was the defensive performance an early-season anomaly, or is it an area opponents can continue to attack?

Auburn won't have to wait long to find out. The Tigers travel to Florida to face Choctawhatchee, giving the defense an immediate opportunity to respond.

Hoover's Defense Sets the Tone

While some teams lit up the scoreboard, Hoover took a different path.

The Buccaneers opened with a 14-8 victory over Muscle Shoals.

Six points separated the teams, but Hoover's ability to hold Muscle Shoals to eight points provides an early indication that defense could be the foundation of its season.

Next comes Opelika, creating one of Week 1's most intriguing matchups.

Can Hoover's defense maintain that level of control against a talented Opelika offense?

That's the question.

Shutouts Make Noise

Two other Week 0 results deserve attention.

Straughn blanked Daleville 29-0, while Wetumpka shut out Andalusia 19-0.

For Straughn, the reward is a Week 1 matchup against T.R. Miller, which opened its season with a 24-14 loss to Orange Beach.

Wetumpka now faces Tallassee, which was shut out by Montgomery Academy.

Those matchups offer something Week 0 cannot: a second data point.

That's when early-season trends begin to become meaningful.

And Now, the Questions Begin

Week 0 gave us winners.

It gave us losers.

It gave us explosive offenses and suffocating defenses.

But more importantly, it gave us questions.

Can Vestavia Hills carry its offensive efficiency into Benjamin Russell?

Can Luverne's defense slow down Brantley's offense?

Can Auburn fix its defensive issues while maintaining its offensive production?

Can Hoover's defense hold up against Opelika?

And which of the teams that dominated Week 0 can prove it wasn't simply a one-night performance?

That's what makes Week 1 so compelling.

The first Friday night gave us the headlines.

The next one starts giving us answers.
